None of us want to see other people making money from our work that are not entitled to do so. Another thing we don't want to see is someone preventing you from making money by giving your work away.
In the past 4 days I have had to write and complain about websites trying to offer free downloads of books or offering out books they do not own for loan.
The website with the download on removed the page within a few days and I am happy with them (www.deviantart.com). They are a site hosting many 'user' pages so can not control what is put up but when asked obviously take things seriously and do something about it. Fantastic Site.
The next site www.lendink.com is new and offers for loan almost all Amazon books and Barnes & Nobel books. They say it is right to lend ebooks out because if it was a paper book then you have no problem loaning it out.
I agree with loaning books and no one is really going to stop it from happening BUT when I loan a book it is to a friend or someone I know personally. The likes of Lendink.com are offering loans to any person who wants it. That is not a loan, that is a free copy/download and therefore stealing.
I have only had the site pointed out to me today so do not know how quick they will remove my authors' links but I do know sites like this will do well if not stopped soon. Everyone wants things for free.
I will update when I know the results of my complaint.
UPDATE
I have not had an answer from the site but the site is no longer available. They say on other social media websites they have been shut down due to people complaining. There are millions of authors and collectively they have a lot of power when channelled in the right directions.  

Let's look at the idea of FREE books. 
I don't mean real books, they don't normally get given away, I mean e-books.
It is now a common thing to see them advertised on Facebook and Twitter. 
There are two main reasons for giving away a book.
1. To stir peoples interest in a new author's work.
2. To encourage interest in an established author's work.
The first one is the one I don't understand. The author spends ages writing a story and having it edited and proofread (no point in putting out your first work and it being let down on poor grammar). Then you give it away? Why would you do that? OK you might get some boost in FB activity and even a following but you have given away something you should value and ask others to see a value in it. So 500 people downloaded your free novel and have now got 650KB less space on their Kindle and it sits with the other 50 they have downloaded this month. 20 friends have now read it (the 20 guaranteed to buy it) and 5 others. You have 6 reviews on Amazon.
Was it worth it? For most authors I doubt it.
Lets look at case 2. The author is established and has 5 full novels available on Amazon priced at $5 and sells 25 per month with excellent feedback and reviews. The author now decides to stimulate interest in his/her work by giving away their best book. They get 500 downloads with 10 people reading the book. (More people read it because they feel it's a bargain). The readers love the work (you knew they would if they read it) and 8 buy the next book. This marketing takes into account the fact your friends have all bought the book and you are now selling to people you hardly know. Was it worth it? Yes because it got new interest in your work and possible sales of your other 4 books.
Another use for FREE books is as a 'loss leader' where you write short stories to promote yourself and get interest in other books sold at a reasonable price.
My advice is if it's worth reading then it's worth paying for. If it's FREE then mostly it's either bad or the author is daft/rich. 
Sorry to all the authors that have promoted themselves with FREE books and if I am wrong then please tell me. Your story might sell your book better than giving it away.

The book retail industry is upside down.
No1 Best sellers like Fifty Shades of Grey and The Hunger Games are on sale everywhere at very low prices. I have seen all three Hunger Games for as low as £5.00 and Fifty Shades of Grey is currently on sale at £3.00 on Amazon although the books are still at a normal price in the USA.
These are books people are out to buy and the shops could hold the price much higher and not only make themselves bigger profits along with the publisher and author but help keep the dying industry alive. This would then allow the bookshops to feed some of the profit back into promoting the lesser known books and increase there sales. It's all upside down. 
The shops are killing themselves. Why would someone buy a No1 best seller for £3 from ASDA and then pay £7.99 for another book. They either buy it in ebook form or wait.

Back to book covers again.

After searching for cover images for the reviews on the site for a couple of weeks now, it surprised me just how many different covers were used by some authors/publishers. Take the book 'We need to talk about Kevin' by Lionel Shriver. I found nine different covers. Now I do understand some of the reasons for changes such as The Orange Prize for Fiction and film production providing a chance to re-market the books. On looking deeper I find a cover just for Kindle, one for Serpent's Tail, her first publisher, one for Harpercollins and one for Counterpoint Press. She has different covers for paperback and hardback.
I wonder how many people have this book twice? or even three or four times?
