A Canopy of Stars by Stephen Taylor

Review by Phoenix
Fantastic book! best I have read for ages.
It is a gripping story of a Jewish man, Loeb Eshpaim/David Neander living in Germany in the early 1800s travelling through Europe then to England. A tale of two parts- one following his life as he grows from a boy into adulthood and how his life progresses. The other in the present following his trial for a petty theft of 1/2 a sheep which caused him to be given the death penalty. Julia Carmichael is the daughter of a lawyer who is happy being a clerk for him rather than marrying. As she sees the injustice of what looked like a gentleman accused of theft she embarks on a fight to get him a re-trial to fight for his life in which she falls in love with him. As they get a chance to put right what was wronged towards him it becomes a human interest story with the public. The storylines interwine cleverly to find out about his life and how he became David Neader from Loeb Ephraim.
A very powerful and touching story about a mans strength of character. A lot of emotional twists and turns which had me enthralled and could not put down my book. I was following his tale intently to find out what happened next in his tragic life to find myself hoping things turn out better for him - in the after-word I find out it's based loosely on a true case which pulled again at the heartstrings.
