Awaken (The Patronus) by Sarah M Ross

Review by D Michelle
This is a lovely read, well thought-out and extremely poignant. It's the tale of Lucy, a young girl who dies and goes on to the afterlife. She is destined for greater things however and begins her training as a Patronus - a spirit that guides other spirits to where they're going next ('heaven' or 'hell'). She is trained to help protect them from evil predators (in this case, vampires) that want to either steal or entice the still-drifting spirits over to swell their dwindling numbers.
Sarah M Ross has woven a good tale and re-invented the afterlife AND certain aspects of the vampire legend. It's amusing in places, heart-wrenching in others and though the love-interest, Max, seems irritatingly reluctant, yet unstoppably interested in Lucy, I can see why the Author sends this story down this particular path, not the all-out sex-fest that some books go down.
In all aspects, this book makes a refreshing change from others in the genre. It's new, fresh and well told except for the editing which lets it down enormously in places.
I began to get irritated with the amount of times 'slightly' was used, possessive apostrophes were sometimes used in exchange for plural apostrophes (and vice-versa) and words were mixed up (past/passed cue/queue) I can only think that the editor was so taken up with the story that they read rather than edited for a good part. To be honest, the editor can't really be blamed for that. I was swept up by the story too.
