Wow what a book!
I'm very visual so like to have cover appeal and this cover in no way does justice to this book. Mildred and Edra are wealthy cousins living just outside of Red River Pass. With a size-able inheritance leaving them comfortable and generous hearts between the two you would think they were liked by all and lived happy lives. However, nothing brings out the worst in others more than money.
With Edra isolating herself at the farm and Mildred's parents gone, the vital trips into town fall on Mildred. Her masculine appearance and mannerisms have not made her popular with the genteel ladies who take tea, with the dominant Josie outright hating her. Life has not been easy for Mildred Dunlap and that's not about to change soon.
The case of Oscar Wilde's homosexuality has gone global putting Edra and Mildred's relationship in precarious waters with them living in a small prejudice town of church-goers. A plan is hatched by Mildred to move any suspicion away from them but backfires as Josie makes it her personal mission to ruin Mildred and anyone that steps above their station.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book from cover to cover. It pulled on my heart strings and whisked me away into Mildreds world.
The characters are very well written and developed with Josie being the perfect villain, I genuinely hate her! Mildred only wants to be herself and live a quiet life but is hounded at every turn. Your emotions match those of the characters and it really opens your eyes to the closed minded views of that era which must have been unbearable to live through if you went against the grain.
Great stand alone book!
