The Fort by Bernard Cornwell![]() Review by Trev
The Fort by Bernard Cornwell Having read most of Bernard Cornwell’s books I am already a fan. This book takes the reader back to the American War of Independence in 1779 and a little known fight between one thousand British (mainly Scots) soldiers with just three small ships against the militia of The State of Massachusetts with a fleet of 40 ships and over 3000 men although many were poorly trained. The result was not in the Americans’ favour and I would guess this book does not describe one of America’s finest hours. The book takes the reader through the battle from start to finish and gives viewpoints from both sides with Bernard Cornwell’s fantastic description of battles sweeping the reader along. It is very much historical fiction and in some ways much more historical than fiction with most of the people and events described from actual accounts.
