Praetorian by Simon Scarrow

Review by Trev
I have not read all the series and I was a little worried about reading number eleven out of order but it is a standalone novel and the basic characters are explained.
It follows the exploits of two Roman Soldiers Marco and Cato and the plot to assassinate just about everyone in Rome. It is up to Marco and Cato to solve the conspiracies and involves them taking on the role of ordinary soldiers in the Praetorian Guard.
Now I know how I wanted, and in some ways expected, this novel to end. I was very disappointed in all ways with the last three or four chapters. It had such potential to get the bad guys and make heroes of the good guys but it failed in all accounts. It didn’t even manage to conclude all the threats it followed and discovered in the story.
Fantastic looking cover but the illustration is not what you find in the book. No fire.
A bit of a let down in what could have been a great story. If Simon had stuck with one threat and made sure the heroes came through and had a little revenge at the end then this would have got top marks.
