Pulse Of Heroes (The Pulse #1) by A. Jacob Sweeny

Review by Anne
Michelle used to feel like she was behind in everything, especially school and relationships. Her great aunt from the old country says she is like a bland meal, "no salt or pepper". But in junior year, everything changes. Her father takes a position on the Town Council, a popular boy in school becomes interested in her, and most importantly, the Hekademos Learning Center, a private school for 'troubled' students, moves into her quiet neighborhood amidst the protests of the entire town.
After an embarrassing fall over the school wall, Michelle meets Elliot and her ordinary ‘bland’ life changes its course forever.
Elliot is no ordinary human. In fact, no one at the Hekademos Learning Center is. Beautiful and fierce, they have survived throughout the millennia by weaving in and out of human events. Through them, Michelle learns that history and myths from around the world are dotted with references to their kind. Michelle falls madly in love with the ever-striking and mysterious Elliot and, as much as he tries to fight it, he develops strong feelings for her as well. Although Elliot carries numerous painful memories from his many pasts, he disregards his own better judgment and the advice of his friends, and finds himself falling for Michelle‘s offbeat personality. Their feelings grow in intensity, but when History catches up with them, the difference between their life paths threatens to destroy any future that they might have had together.
Michelle learns that there are infinite shades of gray between black and white, and has to deal with the bundle of contradictory emotions called love. She has to trust her intuition in order to face the danger and uncertainty of being drawn into Elliot’s wondrous world. Ultimately, it is up to Michelle to make the split-second, life-altering decision that will either tear them apart forever, or give them another chance.
Michelle & Elliot's characters are so complex, each with their own lives. Not just to exsist/be for each others lives or to fall in love and live happily everafter (as the saying says) or as so many other novels do.
As you are reading, you area also learning a great history lesson full of facts, which I found so very interesting. To me it's like a school lesson made fun, you get to enjoy an amazing story at the sametime as you learn a new bit of history that you may not have known.
Pulse of Heroes is full of mystery, suspense, love, paranormal, history and adventure pulled together into a realistic storyline.
Michelle is like so many typical high school girls who are trying despartely to make it through to becoming an adult. Failing as she falls further and further behind in her school studies.
She meets Elliot and finds herself experiencing her first real crush, anger, disappointment, fear, heartbreak, (why is there always heartbreak in our first crush?) oh and did I mention true love??
This isn't your normal, typical paranormal romance, it leaves you on the edge; always wondering whats going to happen next. (not already knowing what)
You will be pulled in, and then along to find yourself not wanting to put it down. (thinking that some how the story will change if you do put it down)
I see another theme couple on the horizon, as in "Team Michelle & Elliot", but I'll have to wait and see if my perdiction come to light!! I must get book #2 Blood of Pulse.
Michelle is a very layered (multi) person form being insecure, (at times) stubborn, (alot, which I love!) warm and oh so funny. Not to mention that the things that go through her brain/mind ALL the time, chapter after chapter was so much fun to be apart of.
With so much happening and going on as the storyline builds throughout the book, excitement builds along the way too, that you're gonna have a few sleepless nights and blurry eyes in the mornings that follow.
I have read many paranormal novels, but I must say that I was truly captivated and spellbound with Pulse of Heroes. Although it's a large novel of over 500 pages, it was so hard at times to actually put the book down. (thank goodness for insomnia)
A. Jacob Sweeny is a genius; the way you are engulfed with total excitement as the characters and story unfolds right before your eyes. (even thou blurry at times)
My heart ached for Elliott's frustrations as he tried to show "undying love" for Michelle. Then swell with happiness, as Michelle began to realize that everything that Elliott has done was for one reason, and one reason alone!!! "He loved her", that he was willing to die for her, if that's what it took to protect and keep her safe. He'd do it without thinking twice, or stopping to think about it.
Will the Doubts and fears thta Hadeno planted in Michelle's mind destroy their love?, or will their love blossom to become a stronghold that captures both their hearts? Hmmm, nope I'm not going to tell ya, you're going to have to read this novel yourself and find out. (ya I know that's not nice)
This amazing novel, so rightfully called PULSE OF HEROES is a must read!!! So run don't walk to the nearest buying point NOWWWWW.
I would recommend Pulse of Heroes for YA (with discretion) and up
