A Case of Black Rock and Other Stories, by Simon Marshland

Review by Julie
A compilation of short stories about life, death, and everything in between. Simon captures some ‘still life’ flash fiction chillers and thrillers – like 'Soul Mates' and 'The Anniversary', and mixes them up with some lighter selections such as 'Sunrise Paving', 'Evening Reflections' and 'Jackson' for a fascinating variation of reading fare.
Most of the story concepts are good; unique with a wide scope of subject matter, and Simon’s descriptions and imagery are well done. But, in all honesty, this book needs major editing— it is littered with poor or non-existent punctuation, grammar and incorrect word choices that really detracted from my pleasure in reading stories that could otherwise be really good.
If this book were to be edited and republished, I would give it a much better rating; as it stands, I can only give it 3 out of 5 stars— and only for the stories themselves, not for the overall presentation.
