The Dark Path by Luke Romyn

Review by Daisy
As stories go, this would not have been my first choice from the comments on Amazon - I don't really get the whole Stephen King vibe, however, it was my favourite price...
The story proper starts in the middle of what is very obviously a torture scene - we are introduced to Vain, the leading character, as the Dark Man and he is indeed that when we see how he responds to, and is responded to, by others. This story shows how he came into being and also his possible path to redemption - whether or not he chooses to take it is another matter altogether...
Whilst this story held my attention, the development of the characters that we meet was on quite a light level - nothing wrong with that, German Rahmennovelle had a whole movement going in that vein - it was enough to 'draw' the pictures in my head of each person. I have to say that I enjoyed this more than I expected to - an archangel becoming good friends with a contract killer was one of my favourite parts of it - and would recommend it as a good 'filler'.
Unexpected, but nonetheless rewarding.
